Homeschool Pottery: Introduction to Clay

In our first class, students will explore the two main pottery methods — wheel throwing and handbuilding — and learn what each is best for. We’ll discuss how to create forms on the wheel, shape and sculpt by hand, and combine both techniques in creative ways.

Each student will plan a project by either:

• Making one wheel-thrown piece and one handbuilt piece, or

• Combining both techniques to create a single larger work.

Students will sketch or find a reference image for their project idea, then begin building their pieces with guidance and demonstrations. This class encourages creativity, craftsmanship, and confidence while learning the fundamentals of working with clay!
